George Smith

George W. Smith, age 75, of Council Bluffs, Iowa, passed away January 26, 2023, at his home.

George was born on April 19, 1947, in Omaha, Nebraska, to the late Glenn and Leora (Kibler) Smith. He graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1965. George proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He married Shirley Christensen on October 26, 1968.They were blessed with three sons. In 1980 he received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Buena Vista College. He retired from the U.S. Postal service in 2014.

He was an active member of Broadway United Methodist Church for 63 years. He enjoyed singing in choir, playing in bell choir, volunteering for Philip’s Cupboard, helping with the sound system, and serving on various committees. He was a member of the Council Bluffs chapter of Kiwanis, serving as president for several years. After he retired, he spent a lot of his free time as a volunteer ranger at Bent Tree golf course. When his sons were growing up, he was active in whatever they enjoyed. He coached soccer, T-ball, and baseball, and was a Boy Scout leader for many years.

George is survived by his wife, Shirley; sons, Gregg and wife Alecia of Lakeview, Andrew and wife Deandra of Underwood, Allan and wife Jaime Davis of Ankeny; grandchildren, Gavin, Stephanie, Macie, Allison, and Trevor; brothers, Fred (Joey) Smith and Chuck Smith of Council Bluffs; sister, Ann (Randy) Ledbetter of Crossville Tennessee; sisters-in-law, Cindy (Dave) Christensen and, Michelle (Dale) Justesen of Underwood, Marla Christensen of Omaha; brother-in-law, Bryce (Carrie) Christensen of Oviedo, FL, nieces, nephews, and many good friends.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM at Hoy Kilnoski Funeral Home on Monday, January 30, 2023.

Memorial Service will be held at 10:00 AM at Broadway United Methodist Church on Tuesday, January 31, 2023. Memorials can be made to Broadway United Methodist Church or Philip’s Cupboard.
