Arlene J. Borwick, age 96, of Council Bluffs passed away June 3, 2019.
She was born October 19,1922 in Garden City, IA, to the late Orlo & Christensa (Fosse) Galbreath. She was a member of Saint John Lutheran Church.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, Harold, son, John, and twin grandsons, Matthew and Timothy VanderHelm.
After graduating from high school, Arlene taught country school. She accepted Harold's marriage proposal and engagement ring in the mail and bravely took the train to California to get married. They were married in Hollywood, CA in 1942. They moved many times and she had many different jobs in addition to raising her 3 children. When Harold was deputy sheriff in Avoca, the residence provided was below the jail. She was cook for the prisoners during that time. When Harold went into conservation, they moved around to different parks and ended up in Council Bluffs. She had several jobs there before becoming the library assistant at Thomas Jefferson High School for 10 years before retiring. She loved following all of her grandchildren's activities and spending time with family and friends!
She is survived by daughters, Pat Nemecek(Ed), Becky VanderHelm(Steve), grandchildren,Kim Atkinson(Joe), Kendra Frohardt(Matt), Ryan VanderHelm(Sara), Kyle VanderHelm(Joey), Mallory Johnston(Nick), great grandchildren, Alissa Bestick(Shain), Taylor Atkinson, Emma & Mason Frohardt, Holly, Piper, Morgan & Gracie VanderHelm, Calvin Johnston and great, great granddaughter, Quinn Bestick.
Visitation will be Friday, at 10:00 AM at Saint John Lutheran followed by funeral service at 11:00 at the church. Interment will be at a later date in the Roland Cemetery, Roland IA. Memorials suggested to Saint John Lutheran Church.
