David Nelson

David Howard Nelson, aged 84, passed away peacefully on April 18th at home.

He was born on May 11th, 1940 in Council Bluffs, to Rudolph & Elizabeth Nelson. He married his wife Joyce on August 10, 1964, and they had three daughters together. He worked for 50 years as a partner & Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the Council Bluffs Veterinary Clinic and was on the Lewis Township Fire Department for over 50 years, 27 of them in the role of chief. He was also US Army Veteran. Dave loved to travel and spend time outdoors, doing things such as scuba diving, boating, and cycling, completing RAGBRAI nine times. His family and his faith were his two biggest passions, and he served as a deacon and Sunday School teacher at Valley View Baptist Church & St Paul's Evangelical Country Church for many years, remaining active in his church until health no longer allowed. Dave loved to help others and was a patient, calm source of support for countless people.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rudolph and Elizabeth Nelson, and brothers, Donald, Larry, and Richard Nelson. He is survived by Joyce - his wife of 60 years, his daughters Diahn (Steward) Hiebner, Karen (Jon) Selander, Beth (Chad) Beck, and grandchildren Jordan (Megan) Hiebner, Justine (Jordan) Anderson, Emily (Luke) Rathke, Kaylin (Levi) Wymore, Jason (Anna) Hiebner, Audrey Selander, Avery and Wade Beck, and 14 great-grandchildren. He will be missed by all.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Hoy Kilnoski Funeral Home on Tuesday, April 22, 2025. Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 AM at Hoy Kilnoski Funeral Home on Wednesday, April 23, 2025. Memorials are suggested to Lewis Township Fire Department St. Paul Evangelical Country Church, or My Nurse Healthcare LLC.
