Donald G. Rubsam

Donald Gene Rubsam, the son of Arthur and Johanna (Steenhoven) Rubsam, was born near Melvin, Iowa on September 5, 1935. He received his education at Sanborn and Ames, Iowa on September 10, 1956. He was united in marriage to Anna Talsma, in Matlock, Iowa. The couple lived at Sanborn, where Don was employed with Farmers Coop and Raymond Trucking. They moved to Sheldon, Iowa in 1962, where Don was employed by Big 4 Soybean processing. While in Sheldon, their baby girl, Joni Marie arrived; and two years later a baby boy, James Arthur. Soon after, the family moved to Spencer, Iowa where Don was employed with Modern Business Equipment as an outside salesperson. In 1976, they moved to Red Oak, Iowa, where Don was employed by Red Oak Office Supply, and another move 2 years later to Council Bluffs for Don to be employed with Victor Calculators and Tri States Computers, and still later for Dickerson Sporting Goods. Don and Anna retired in 1996 and moved to Carter Lake. Don passed away at Longview Care Center in Missouri Valley, Iowa on October 11, 2014 reaching the age of 79 years. Everyone who knew Don knew he was an avid fisherman, but even more, an avid teller of fish stories. In his earlier years, he was also active in Community Theatre, Barbershoppers, Toastmasters, Bowling and card playing. While in Carter Lake, Don enjoyed Optimists Club and Poker Nite; and he was an active member of Carter Lake Presbyterian Church. Don was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Gale Douglas; a great grandson, Gavyn Scott; and brother-in-law Lynn Baldwin. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Anna; daughter Joni and husband Ralph Myhlhousen; son, James Rubsam and wife, Karen; two grandchildren, Rhiannon Marie and Chelsey Sue; eight great-grandchildren; his sister, Muriel Baldwin; his sister-in-law, Kay Rubsam; his aunt Dodie Rubsam; a host of cousins, nieces and nephews; and a multitude of friends. May Don rest in peace and may our memories of him live on. A Celebration of Life Service will be held Saturday, October 18th at 10:30 a.m. at the Carter Lake Presbyterian Church. A luncheon will follow in the church fellowship hall. Memorials may be directed to the Carter Lake Presbyterian Church, 3030 North 9th Street, Carter Lake, Iowa 51510.
