Duane H. Schaben, age 79, passed away at Methodist Jennie Edmundson on May 4, 2024.
He was born June 25, 1944, to the late William and Josephine (Block) Schaben in Earling, IA. Duane was a longtime barber in Council Bluffs and a member of Saint Patrick Catholic Church. After high school, Duane enlisted in the Iowa National Guard where he proudly served from 1963-1965. Duane began his career as a barber in 1965 in Omaha, Nebraska. On August 13, 1966, Duane married the love of his life, Joan Rau. Shortly thereafter, Duane continued his long career as a barber in Council Bluffs, Iowa, where he cemented himself as one of the top three barbers every year. Everyone who entered his barbershop was always welcome, entertained, and walked out more handsome.
When not cutting hair, Duane enjoyed raising and racing Greyhounds. He also never met a stranger in life, whether it be in the barbershop, the grocery store, or the casino. Duane was a master at cards, dice, slots and the stock market. He also was an amazing husband, father and grandfather. He enjoyed watching his granddaughters grow, perform and compete. His gaggle of girls will miss him immensely!
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers Marvin, Raymond, Eugene and Jack Schaben; sister, Delores Staley; and infant sister, Joan Schaben.
Duane is survived by his wife, Joan Schaben; daughters Stephanie Tingley and Amy Schaben; grandchildren Madison Tingley, Tyler Tingley, Emily O'Connor, and Claire O'Connor; siblings Charles (Delores) Schaben, Betty Grote, Janice Schmitz, Gladys (Dan) Rau and Ronald (Marge) Schaben; nieces, nephews, cousins; a host of other family, friends, and longtime customers.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM with a Rosary recitation at Hoy Kilnoski Funeral Home on Tuesday, May 7, 2024.
Mass of Christian Burial will at 10:00 AM at Saint Patrick Catholic Church on Wednesday, May 8, 2024. Inurnment will be in Saint Joseph Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Saint Patrick Catholic Church or Wings of Hope.
