In 1965 Ed and his family moved to Avoca, Iowa and patrolled I80 and the surrounding highways and was known as the "Singing Bear”. He retired in 1988 after 26 years as a State Trooper. In 1989 he was appointed Magistrate Judge in Pottawattamie County serving the bench in Avoca and Council Bluffs. He retired in 2007 after 18 years.

Family time was camping trips to the mountains and seeing the USA, sitting around the table talking and laughing with family and friends, celebrating marriages, birthdays, 4th of July, Christmas, and relaxing on the deck with a Michelob watching the birds in the backyard.
