Eugene Olan Woellhof of Council Bluffs, Iowa, died on the 2nd day of August, 2012, at the age of 91. Gene was born in Clay Center, Kansas, on January 8, 1921, to Irene (Woerner) and Albert Woellhof. Gene?s mother died of a hemorrhage a few hours after his birth. Gene attended Four Mile Country School and was raised on the farm by his Grandmother Barbara Woellhof until he was age eleven. Then he went to live with his father and stepmother, Leota (Woerner) Woellhof in Clay Center. When Gene was a teenager, he made his commitment to follow Christ as his Savior and became a member at the Presbyterian Church in Clay Center where he regularly attended. Gene graduated from the Clay County Community High School in the class of 1939. On May 9, 1942, Gene married Thelma L. Hoffman to begin their 68 years of marriage. On July 21, 1942, Gene was called into active duty with the Army and served in Hawaii with the Military Police. Gene received his honorable discharge in February of 1946. After the war, Gene was employed for several years by the (REA) Rural Electric Association at Clay Center and Mankato, Kansas. Gene and Thelma?s only child, Dan, was born on November 20, 1948. In 1955, Gene began his employment as an electrician with the Kansas State University Housing Maintenance in Manhattan, Kansas, until his retirement on March 31, 1983. Gene was President of the KSU Classified Affairs Committee as well as President of the KSU Retired Classified Employees Association. Gene was a member of the American Legion of Kansas Post 0017 in Manhattan. Gene?s hobby was woodworking as he spent many hours making things to be enjoyed by his family and friends. In April of 2005, Gene and Thelma moved from Manhattan to Council Bluffs, Iowa. In June of 2010, Gene and Thelma moved to Risen Son Christian Village of Council Bluffs in an independent apartment. Gene was preceded in death by wife Thelma on July 29, 2010. Gene is survived by his son Dan Eugene and wife Paulette of Council Bluffs, Iowa; his grandson Derek and wife Jessica and great-granddaughters Kaidnce and Emerson of Virginia Beach, VA.; and his grandson Blaik and wife Amanda and great-grandson Henry, of Urbandale, Iowa. Gene?s Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on August 6, 2012, at the First Christian Church, 20794 Highway 92, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, with viewing available two hours prior to the service. After the service, the burial will be at the Garner Township Cemetery just Northeast of Council Bluffs then followed by a time of family visitation with desserts at the church. The family suggests that memorials be made to the First Christian Church of Council Bluffs in lieu of flowers.
