George Allen Rude

August 13, 1940 — December 11, 2019

George Rude was born in Blanchardville, Wisconsin on August 13, 1940 to Peter and Alma (Torkelson) Rude. He was the youngest of 9 children. His father passed away when he was 9 and his mother died when he was 10. His sister Alice took him in, along with some of his other siblings. He helped his sister on her dairy farm until the age of 19. He joined the Navy in 1959 and served for 9½ years.

He met his future wife, Sally Beckner, through his sister-in-law Nell. They married on August 27, 1965. After they were married, George had three years of shore duty in National City, California. Their first child, Jodi, was born on January 29, 1967.

In the summer of 1968, George and Sally moved back to Council Bluffs and purchased their first home. Their son, Scott was born on October 14, 1970.

George worked various jobs when they moved back to Iowa. He spent some time at Griffin Pipe and Vickers. In 1975, he began working at the Omaha World-Herald. He worked there for 35 years before retiring in 2010.

In 1976, they purchased a new home in Twin City. It was there where they raised Jodi and Scott. He saw his children graduate high school and college. While his children were in college, George and Sally became interested in selling items in craft fairs. George became very skilled at creating layered animals and other interesting crafts. George also enjoyed camping and fishing. He spent many hours fishing on his pontoon boat in Lake Icaria. George loved the Kansas City Royals, the Kansas City Chiefs and the Iowa State Cyclones. He loved to watch westerns and war movies in his “man cave”. He also loved spending time with his only grandchild, Kara.

In October of 2010, George was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. He became a patient of the VA. His wife, Sally, was able to take care of him in their home until March of 2017. He was moved to Midlands Living Center, where the staff took very good care of him. On December 11, 2019, George died of complications of Parkinson’s disease.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by 4 brothers and 4 sisters.

George is survived by his wife of 54 years, Sally Rude; children, Jodi Hinsdale (Rob) and Scott Rude (Heather); granddaughter, Kara Hinsdale; a host of other family and friends.
