George Lewis Barker

October 28, 1930 — October 19, 2024

George Lewis Barker, age 93, passed away October 19, 2024. He was born October 28, 1930 to Roy and Daisy (Roach) Barker in Kent, IA. George lived a life full of love, laughter, and adventure. He married Leona (Nickle) on August 12, 1962, the couple had been married 62 years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his infant son; and grandson, Franklin Ross; brothers, Everett Barker, and David Barker; sister, Lois Toney; and his father and mother in-law, Rue and Ruth Nickle.

George is survived by his wife, Leona Barker; daughters, Susan (David) Cole, and Nancy (Jim) Ross; his Vietnamese "grandson", Dai "Bill" Le; his brother-in-law, Randall (Candias) Nickle; nieces, nephews, and a host of other family and friends.

George was proud to have worked for UPS in Omaha for 25 years. He also had fond memories as a Parts Manager for Plymouth dealerships in Council Bluffs, managing various gas stations in Omaha, working for Roy Ord's Skelly station, and driving trucks for John Ruan. In his youth, George worked for various farmers in the Clearfield, Iowa area and also for "Doc" Thompson who was Clearfield's veterinarian. When the Iowa State Fair would roll around, George milked a LOT of cows so that area residents could attend the fair. A dedicated individual, George served his country in the military and spent two impactful years stationed in Berlin.

In his retirement, George became an AVID auction follower. So much so, the auctioneers started putting him to work. Since he loved getting to places early, he would help with set-up and then would help watch for bids. He started collecting junk to dismantle and recycle. He also gathered pumps-both well and kitchen pumps. George would repair, clean, and repaint the pumps to sell again at auctions in Missouri. George always enjoyed a good game of Pitch and he will always be remembered for giving his favorite advice, "turn that light off", "don't turn too short", and "park straight".
