A time to be born
On May 31, 1941, George Donald Smith entered the world in Egypt, Mississippi. He was the seventh child born to George and Georgia Smith.
A time to plant
After leaving Mississippi, George moved to Omaha, Nebraska, to start his life as a young man. At age 19, he began working for The Dial Corporation. With that company, he and his family made moves to Minnesota, Nebraska and lastly to Iowa where he retired.
A time to love
On April 3, 1964, George married Mary Frances Starks in Omaha, Nebraska. To this union they would welcome George Donald Smith Jr., Anita Marie Smith, Carlos Ray Smith, and Michelle Lynn Smith.
A time to laugh
George had many hobbies and things he loved to do. He found great joy in visiting and talking with friends and families, and reminiscing about the good old days. He loved helping out at his church and was willing to tackle any project or deed that needed completing there. He spent as much time as he could driving. Whether driving for work, to see family and friends, or just leisurely cruising around town, he loved being behind the wheel. George was also a master gardener. He loved spring time when he could plant rows and rows of greens, tomatoes, okra, cabbage and onions. Many people benefited from his passion for playing in the dirt.
A time to mourn
George was preceded in death by his parents, George and Georgia (Arthur) Smith; his son Carlos Ray Smith; his mother- and father-in-law, Jimmie and Ruby Starks; his brothers Robert Smith, James Smith and David Smith; his sisters Rose Carter, Myrdis Woodard and Lucille Lofton, and many other loved ones and friends.
A time to rest
On Saturday morning, October 10, 2020, God called George home to rest. We are sure his family and friends that preceded him in death were waiting at Heaven’s gate with arms open wide to welcome him.
A time to remember
George leaves to cherish – and continue loving him– his caring and devoted wife of 56 years, Mary; his son George Jr. (Diana) of Fort Madison, Iowa; daughters Anita Hall of Omaha, Nebraska, and Michelle (Adam) Smith of Council Bluffs, Iowa. Also to hold his memory close are his grandchildren Aaron (Candace), Alan, Armani, David Jr., Danita, Amber, Matt, Mike (Katy), Kevin and Jon. Great grandchildren Keion, Jaslene, Aaliyah, Cassadee, Aaron Jr., Skyler, Reilynn, Reiburn and Krysta, and his great-great grandson, Ryker. George is also survived by his brother Boyd (LaVora) Smith of Kansas City, Missouri, Mabel Smith of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, sister-in-laws Louise Thomason of St. Louis, Missouri, Tamara Dickinson of Omaha, Nebraska, Deloris Starks of Omaha, Nebraska, Barbara Smith of St. Paul, Minnesota and Julia Smith of Phoenix, Arizona, and brother-in-law Jimmie Starks of Omaha, Nebraska.
