John Edward “Jack” Kaufman, age 89, passed away April 28, 2017 at CHI Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs.
He was born in Omaha, Nebraska on April 30, 1927 to the late C. Alfred and Elizabeth (Spracktes) Kaufman. John graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School and then proudly served his country in the United States Army at the end of World War II. He retired from the Union Pacific Railroad as a conductor after 47 years. John was a member of First Christian Church and served in several ministries at the church. He was also a member of the American Legion Rainbow Post #2.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers, William and Robert Kaufman; sister, Ruth Mahan.
John is survived by his wife of 66 years, Emogene “Emmy” Kaufman; son and daughter-in-law, John and Jackie Kaufman; daughter and son-in-law, Susan and David Sheehy; sisters, Betty Evans and Phyllis King; grandchildren, Jonathan Sheehy, Emily Sheehy, Eric Krienert, Katy Whidden, Keith Krienert; great grandchildren, Alex, Anna and Payton Krienert, Nicolette, Taylor and Rory Krienert, Addy, Kylee and Grayson Whidden.
Visitation is 6:00p.m. to 8:00p.m. on Monday at the Hoy-Kilnoski Funeral Home. Funeral service is 10:00a.m. on Tuesday at First Christian Church – 20794 Hwy 92 in Council Bluffs. Interment with Military Honors is in Cedar Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to First Christian Church.
