John L. Evanoff, 69 years, Council Bluffs, passed away February 5, 2017. Born in Oakland, California, June 26, 1947, he was the son of the late Leo and Geraldine (Chaffin) Evanoff. He served in the United States Army and has been a firefighter for the Council Bluffs Fire Department for many years.
He is survived by the love of his life and soulmate, Julie Evanoff; his sons, Brent Evanoff (Caroline) and Ebenezer Evanoff; his daughter, Kristin Contreras (Mario, Sr.); grandchildren, Nicholas, Katherine and Hannah Evanoff, Mario, Jr. and Alex Contreras; two brothers, Tom Evanoff (Gloria) and David Evanoff; and a host of other family and friends.
A Celebration of John’s Life will be held February 22, 2017, Wednesday 11AM to 2PM at the Hoy – Kilnoski Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, Jack requested that friends and family instead make donations to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital and to Gold Star Teen Adventures (GSTA). For a few years, Jack's grandson, Mario Jr. a senior at West Point Academy has served as a mentor for GSTA, which is a nonprofit that provides unique summer adventure opportunities to our nation's Gold Star Youth. The organization is dedicated to providing healing, mentorship, development, and opportunity to the children of special operations Service Members who lost their lives in the line of duty.
