Larry A. Nelson

Larry A. Nelson, 83, went home to meet his Lord on August 13, 2016 at Mayview Nursing Home in Raleigh, NC after a brief battle with cancer. He was born in Omaha, Nebraska and grew up in Council Bluffs, Iowa. He graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in Council Bluffs and received a BS degree from Iowa State University in agronomy. He received a MS degree from Texas A&M University in soil science and a PhD from North Carolina State University, Raleigh NC, in statistics and soil science. He taught statistics at NC State and did teaching and statistical consulting worldwide. He retired from NC State in 1989. Beginning in 2002 he served as interim coordinator and then assistant dean for international programs in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences at NC State until 2007. He was active in Kiwanis in Raleigh and served as church organist for many years. He enjoyed bicycling and participated in many bicycle tours including RAGBRAI in Iowa. He also enjoyed genealogy and world travel and wrote several papers on tourism. He surpassed 1500 hours of volunteer service in the Department of Radiation Oncology at Rex Hospital in Raleigh. His mother, Elizabeth Lewis Nelson, was a direct descendent of the Lewis brothers for whom Lewis Township in Pottawattamie County, Iowa was named. He was preceded in death by his parents Rudolph and Elizabeth (Lewis) Nelson and two brothers Donald H. and Richard L Nelson. He is survived by a brother David H. (Joyce) and sister-in-law Dorothy (Richard) Nelson and nieces and nephews and their families. CHANGE OF SERVICE TIME Visitation is 1:00 p.m. on Saturday at the Hoy-Kilnoski Funeral Home with the funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. Interment will be in Lewis Township Cemetery near Council Bluffs, IA.
