Larry Claude Hammitt, age 76, passed away on August 5, 2024, at Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha, NE. He was born May 4, 1948, in Council Bluffs, Iowa. His parents were Claude and Berniece Hammitt of rural Logan, IA.
Larry married Jill (Frahm) in 1967 and they have spent 57 ½ years together. They always said they got married as kids and grew up together! During this time, they were blessed with a son, Michael Eugene in 1967 and a daughter, Jennifer Jill in 1971. Larry was devoted to his family and loved spending time with them. He loved playing trucks and tractors in the mud and dirt as well as indoor games and puzzles with them.
Larry graduated from Logan-Magnolia Community High School in 1966. He later went on to earn an Associate’s Degree in the Engineering field at IWCC. In 1968, Larry was drafted into the U.S. Army to serve in the Vietnam war. He was a proud member of the BIG RED ONE, Charlie Company Swamp Rats. His main duties were to patrol the jungles and villages near the Cambodia border. And he spent lots of time in the swamps as well. Larry's year of serving in Vietnam finally ended, leaving him with about six months left of his two-year commitment.
Back state side, he spent those six months with his wife Jill and son Michael at Fort Riley, Kansas pulling guard duty. One night while on guard duty, Larry realized that life is a fragile thing in many ways, and he asked the Lord Jesus for forgiveness and to save him. He wanted to be one of God's children. He studied scripture, attended Bible studies, shared his faith and experience with many, hoping they, too, would want to belong to the Lord Jesus.
He spent most of his career working for the NRCS as an inspector. He earned many awards for the hard work and creativity he put into his job. He retired in 2015. Larry was selected to join the Vietnam Honor Flight to Washington DC. His favorite thing of the entire trip was the Vietnam Wall. He felt very fortunate to get to make the trip.
Some of his most cherished times were spent with his granddaughter, Jessica and her husband, Grant Sorrell, and of course his grandson, Joe. He was delighted for any time he could spend with his great-grandson Silas and his great-granddaughter Myla Rose.
Larry was preceded in death by his son Michael and his wife Terry; brothers, Steve and Roger; and his parents.
He is survived by his wife, Jill; daughter, Jennifer and her husband Arlyn Jensen; grandson, Joe Jensen; granddaughter, Jessica and her husband Grant Sorrell; and great-grandchildren, Silas and Myla Rose. He is also survived by his brother, Kirk and his wife Cynthia.
