Leslie Andrew Mefferd

March 27, 1936 — October 15, 2017

Leslie Andrew Mefferd, the son of Daniel and Odelia (Bauer) Mefferd, was born in March of 1936. Many knew Leslie as ‘Red’. Red grew up on a farm with 5 brothers, Dan, Virgil, Ron, Marvin & Bob and 3 sisters Bernadine, Marlene, and Linda.

Leslie was united in marriage to his wife and life partner for more than 59 years, Mary Louise Wagner. The couple was blessed with three children including son Mike, and daughters Odelia and Phyllis.

Following their marriage Mary and Red lived in Avoca, Iowa, where Red worked on a farm. Red and Mary then moved to LaVista, Nebraska. From there they moved to Council Bluffs, Iowa. Red worked as a mechanic in Omaha. Red decided to start his own business, Mefferd Trucking and Excavating in 1967.

Red and his son, Mike, worked together and hauled many loads of dirt, dug footings and basements. Red was an excellent equipment operator and had a successful business for more than 45 years. He was a hard worker and provided for his family. He also helped relatives and friends in their time of need. During the winters Red would do snow removal for businesses and also made sure the neighbors could get out for work each day.

Red was an avid collector. He collected cars, antiques, tools, and more. Red loved the sport of racing and had seasonal seats at the Kansas City Speedway. Whenever possible he attended t races with his son, brothers and business associates. He liked visiting with friends, fishing, & gardening. Red and son Mike enjoyed 4 wheel drive pickup pulling in the 70’s. Red and Mike won lots of trophies and had many fans! Some of you will remember the Snoopy pulling truck. Red liked the Peanuts comic and decided Snoopy on the dog house would be his mascot. This would begin the snoopy legacy which also served to hide his specially designed hitch!!

Red loved the spring time, when he would successfully hunt mushrooms. Sometimes Mary would be up for hours cleaning his prizes. Red loved to deer hunt in the winter.
When his beloved wife, Mary, was diagnosed with dementia, he devoted his time to care for her. He was a patient, kind and loving husband as well as caregiver.

Leslie is survived by his wife, Mary Louise (Wagner) Mefferd; son, Michael and Lonnie Mefferd; daughters, Odelia (Mike) Miller and Phyllis (Randy) Lich; grandchildren: Brandy and John Netty, Drew Mefferd, James Miller, Cory and Jill Cunard, Jonathan and Molly Miller; great grandchildren: Elisha Cunard and Ezra Miller; brothers: Virgil, Ron, Marv, and Bob, sisters: Bernadine, Marlene and Linda.
