Margaret K. Butterbaugh

March 21, 1920 — January 23, 2017

Margaret K. Butterbaugh, age 96, of Council Bluffs passed away January 23, 2017 at Methodist Jennie Edmundson Hospital.

She was born March 21, 1920, in Neola, Iowa, to Clair and Orpha (Crombie) Galiher. Margaret graduated from Harlan High School in 1937 and married Leonard J. Butterbaugh on April 11, 1938.

Marg and Len moved from Shelby, Iowa, to Council Bluffs in 1948. Besides rearing six children, she was the secretary/bookkeeper for their business, Butterbaugh Electric Company, and worked another 16 years as an office clerk for Cogley Clinic.

After the death of her husband in 1983, Margaret became a tireless volunteer. For 25 years she was a part-time secretary at Grace Presbyterian Church and New Horizon, along with 18 years on the Jennie Edmundson Hospital Auxiliary and as an assistant for 17 years at Inter-Faith Response. She also volunteered for Meals on Wheels, Indian Hills Nursing Center and the Senior Center.

Her family appreciated that she was an excellent cook and seamstress (Grandma can fix anything). At church she served as an elder, a deacon, a member of the Women’s Association and Mariners. Other memberships included American Legion Auxiliary and was recognized for 65 years, IOOF and the original Opti-Mrs. She enjoyed bowling in her spare time and was thankful for that activity, as well as Bingo, while residing at Risen Son Christian Village.

Besides her parents and husband, Margaret is preceded in death by her sisters, Dorothy Smith and Lillian Schechinger, and brothers, John “Bud” Galiher and Everett Galiher.

Survivors include her children Karen Williams (companion Bernie Rosenberg), Orpha Butterbaugh, Leonard C. (Melanie) Butterbaugh, Lila (Chuck) Hansen, John (Karla) Butterbaugh and Diana (Larry) Mether; 16 grandchildren, 33 great grandchildren, 26 great-great grandchildren; sister, Vernita Leake, of Missoula, Montana; a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Roberta and James Currie, of Ridgeland, Mississippi; many nieces, nephews and friends.

Funeral service is 10:00 a.m. on Saturday with visitation during the hour prior to the service at the Hoy-Kilnoski Funeral Home. Interment is in Cedar Lawn Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to New Horizon Church Building Fund, Inter-Faith Response or Risen Son Activity Department.
