Peggy King
December 19th, 1940 - August 4th, 2024
Margaret (Peggy) King, age 83, passed into the arms of her Lord on August 4th, 2024. She was in her home with family.
Peggy was born in Anthon, Iowa, on December 19, 1940, to Joseph and Viola (Bair) Carr. Her one sibling, Don, was thirteen years old. When Peggy was very young, her grandmother began taking her to the Anthon Church of Christ. She came to know and love Jesus there, and also met a handsome college student who drove to Anthon to preach on weekends. Duane King became the earthly love of her life.
Peggy attended Nebraska Christian College where she and Duane met many lifelong friends who were there through laughter and tears. They were married on August 12, 1961. They began their ministry together at First Christian Church in Norfolk, Nebraska, where Christine and Jonathan were born, and it was in Norfolk that God began to call Duane into ministry with Deaf people.
The family moved to Griswold, Iowa, to minister with the Church of Christ and to begin part-time work with Deaf students close by. In 1971, the King family moved to Council Bluffs and devoted their full-time work to following Jesus in Deaf ministry. They started Deaf Missions and began traveling to raise support and encourage Deaf ministries beyond Council Bluffs. God has grown the impact of Deaf Missions to reach around the world with a complete Bible translation into sign language and the recent release of the full length “Jesus” movie.
Peggy did not want to leave the Griswold church she loved so much, but found it to be her great privilege. Duane once tallied the miles they traveled for Deaf Missions and the total was equal to a trip to the moon and back.. five times!
Duane and Peggy moved to Risen Son Christian Village in 2010. Soon afterward, frontal temporal dementia required Peggy to be placed in its lock-down memory care facility. Miraculously, God chose to heal her. Her family and this world benefitted from her unimpaired love, service, and inspiration for another 14 years. The healing instilled in her a greater desire to serve the Lord. She lived with severe nerve pain in her foot and leg, but said the pain kept her humble and dependent upon God. She loved the people at Risen Son and found fulfillment and joy in that season of her life.
After Duane’s passing in 2022, Peggy found a new fortitude, new ways to love people, and new ways to make a difference.
In addition to Duane, Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, and her son-in-law, Jeff Clausen. Those grateful for the way Peggy poured her love into their lives include her daughter and husband, Christine Clausen Cannon and Martin Cannon and her son and his wife, JD and Tia King, as well as her grandchildren, Isaac Clausen, Luke Clausen, McKenzie King, Dakota King and Kassidy King, along with many other family and friends. Visitation will be Thursday August 8th from 4-8pm. The Funeral Service will be Friday at 10am with lunch following. Both with be held at First Christian Church, 20794 Hwy 92, Council Bluffs, Iowa. May God receive the Glory for her beautiful life during this time of community.
