Opal "Nadine" Trede

June 9, 1941 — August 2, 2024

Opal Nadine Trede was born on June 9, 1941, in Walnut, IA, to Tom and Gertrude (Driver) Royer. When she was young, her family moved to the Honey Creek, IA, area from their Anita, IA, farm. She grew up with three older brothers. A cherished memory was a playful prank she pulled on one of her brothers involving a few rotten eggs and the outhouse!

After her parents retired from farming, her family moved to Council Bluffs, IA. Nadine graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1959. She made lifelong friends during high school, participated in basketball, and enjoyed roller skating and the dances at Ewald's. She worked at the telephone company before marrying Howard Reese on November 7, 1959. The couple had three daughters, Robin, Ronda, and Renae. Howard's employment allowed their family to enjoy living in Council Bluffs, IA; Tulsa, OK; Dallas, TX; Chicago, IL; and Davis, CA, before returning home to the Honey Creek, IA, area.

Years later, during her employment with her brother at Kap-R Toppers, she met Jim Trede, and they married on October 13, 1979. Underwood, IA, has been their home since. While Jim kept our state roads safe, Nadine started an in-home daycare. The children quickly nicknamed her "Dean'ne". For over 25 years, her home was busy as she loved and cared for dozens of children. She recently came out of retirement to love and spoil a second-generation daycare child.

Nadine's sincere belief in Jesus's redeeming grace and assurance that she would join Him in heaven was a source of comfort for her and those around her. As an active and dedicated member of Underwood Lutheran Church, she served in various capacities over the years. Her favorite roles were serving snacks at VBS and overseeing the installation of the church's memorial stained-glass windows.

Jim and Nadine enjoyed sitting outside and welcoming friends to their beautiful yard full of plants and blooming beds, which she lovingly tended to. They enjoyed visiting friends and taking trips to Branson, MO, whenever they could get away.

Nadine's love for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was a source of immense joy. She was always there to offer sound advice and would travel near and far to support her family in their pursuits, whether in education, music, sports, dance, cheer, 4-H, Marine service, or garden tractor pulls. She celebrated the arrival of her great-grandchildren, exclaiming proudly with a grin that "She had always been great!" We agree, and Nadine will be deeply missed.

Nadine was preceded in death by her parents, Tom and Gertrude (Driver) Royer; Special Aunts Opal and Pearl Driver; brothers Bert, Jim, and John.

Those left to cherish Nadine's memory include her loving and devoted husband of nearly 45 years, Jim; children Robin (Dave) Adams of Manilla, IA, Ronda Nelson of Council Bluffs, IA, and Renae (Bill) McDonald of Olathe, KS; grandchildren Erin (Jesse) Denker, Krystin Adams (Darren), Michael, Amber, and Matthew Nelson, Brett, Nathan, and Kaitlyn McDonald; great-grandchildren Mason Swisher, Jayden and Braxten Ghislandi, Kinnick and Rhett Slechta, and Andrew Denker; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The Memorial Service will be on Thursday, August 15, 2024, at 4:00 PM at Hoy Kilnoski Funeral Home, with open visitation to follow until 7:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family will direct the memorials in Nadine's honor.
