Paul Alvin Schomer, age 71, of Carter Lake, Iowa, formerly of Neola, Iowa, was welcomed into heaven on December 17, 2023.
He was born on November 12, 1952 to the late Alfonso and Edna (Mickels) Schomer. Paul graduated from Tri-Center High School in Neola, Iowa and attended Capitol Cosmetology School. He married the love of his life, the late Mary Hausner, in 1975. Paul was proud of his two children, Jennifer and Anthony. Paul worked as a Cosmetologist for 30 years, owning his own business for many years. He then worked at Marriott and UNMC before retirement. In his spare time, you could find Paul sipping coffee, reading the newspaper, and talking to anyone and everyone. Paul loved a good Western movie, Diet Pepsi, and a great deal. Paul was an active member of Corpus Christi Parish and attended Our Lady of Carter Lake Church for many years.
Paul loved to travel and getting out of the house with the family to go out to dinner. When Mary wanted to go on a random trip, Paul never hesitated to drive the entire way. Paul loved dancing with Mary to "The Joker," their favorite song and "Time In A Bottle," their wedding song. Paul was an amazing dancer and always took the lead. Paul was always a calm man, even when Mary tossed the car keys on the roof of the house. He calmly got a ladder, got them down, and opened the door with a smile. Paul was the first person to call when you needed someone to change a tire or help fix a car issue. In the late 90s, Paul, Tony, and Jennifer started a mowing service and Paul loved being involved with teaching them the value of hard work. Paul was known by his children for hot dog pizza, creamy rice, and steaks. Paul loved being a father and volunteered his time as a Boy Scout Leader and Tee Ball coach for Tony. He also loved being a "Band Dad" for the Tee Jay Band.
Paul loved being a grandpa to Harper and Irelynn. They will miss him so much. He loved giving them candy, fist bumps, and random trinkets. Paul loved family gatherings and firing up the grill. He loved garage sales and fishing with his kids in the summer. Paul never hesitated to stop and get a pop and candy while at the bait shop. At family game nights, he was the perfect Alex Trebek for the Jeopardy games. Paul loved to be surrounded by family and enjoyed laughing. Paul loved video games and would keep his kids up wayyy too late to play Dr. J versus Larry Bird. Paul enjoyed playing basketball and was a referee for a long time. He loved to play basketball with his brother-in-laws in the driveway. Paul always looked for the good in all people and was a big fan of cars and trucks. Paul loved creating things and enjoyed knitting and crocheting in his spare time. Paul was a friend to all and will be sorely missed by those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Mary passed away in 2017 and Paul always missed her. He shared pictures of her frequently and would share stories of their past. Paul looked for signs of her every day.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, his parents, Alfonso and Edna, and mother-in-law, Bette.
Paul is survived by daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Daniel Smith; son and daughter-in-law, Anthony Schomer and Erin; siblings, Jerel Schomer (Mary), Joel Schomer (Chris), Peter Schomer (Carmen), Mark Schomer (Mary Ellen); granddaughters, Harper Melia Smith and Irelynn Rose Smith; father-in-law, Emil Hausner, and a host of other family and friends.
