Richard "Dick" Dean Johnson

Richard "Dick" Dean Johnson entered the loving arms of his savior, Jesus, on March 19, 2016, at his home in Council Bluffs, Iowa, surrounded by family. He was born on Mothers Day May 12, 1940 to Seymour and Clara (Brown) Johnson in Villisca, Iowa. Richard was baptized June 2, 1940, and confirmed June 13, 1954 at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church. He graduated from Villisca High School with the class of 1958, where he held the school High Jump record until the early 1990s. Richard attended UNO where he met and married Mary Ann "Pat" Engel on July 8, 1962. Richard began his 39 year career on January 8, 1962 with Nebraska Consolidated Mills in Omaha. He was soon transferred to Grand Island, Nebraska. He was transferred back to Omaha in 1963, soon after he was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was in Korea in 1964, when his oldest son, Whitney, was born. Upon discharge from the U.S. Army, he returned to his career and was transferred to Sherman, Texas where another son, Mitchell, was born in 1966. After transferring back to Omaha in 1966, a third son, Spencer, was born in 1971. During the same year, the company became ConAgra, Inc. Additional transfers took him to California for 12 years and back to Omaha where he retired in 2001. During his retirement years, Richard continued to serve in his church and he loved volunteering with the CREATE foundation. He found great joy in family activities, traveling, genealogy, photography and trains. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Leona Kernen, brother Larry Johnson, niece Jennifer Johnson, and in-laws Bill (Augusta) Engel, Lavern (Eleanor) Engel, Don (Wilma) Engel. Survived by his loving wife of 53 years Mary Ann (Pat), sons Whitney (Carla), Mitchell (Wendy), and Spencer (Jennifer); seven grandchildren: Courtney and Cameron Johnson, Kendra and Taylor Johnson, Adam (Johna), Daniel, and Joseph Gallagher, five great-grandchildren, sister Avon (Garry) Mumm, in-laws A.W. (Bill) Kernen, Gloria Johnson, Marvin (Leora) Engel, Louis Engel, and many nieces and nephews. Visitation is Thursday 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at the Hoy-Kilnoski Funeral Home. Funeral service is Friday 10:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Interment will be in Hebron, Nebraska on Saturday 1:00 p.m. Memorials may be directed to the family.
