Ronald Nathan Smith, 97, was taken to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on April 8, 2025 at Amelia Senior Living in Council Bluffs. Ron was born October 1, 1927 in rural Cass County, Iowa to James Smith and Cora (Hampel) Smith. He was the youngest of six siblings.
Ron was an avid athlete, especially as a baseball pitcher. He met the love of his life Alice Anderson on a baseball field in Red Oak after being introduced by Alice's father Curt. He married Alice January 22, 1950 and they made a wonderful life together, spending an amazing 75 years by each other's side until his last breath. They had two sons Doug and Steve. Ron was a proud Veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in the Korean War. He went on to a long career in the floor covering industry, running Smith Floor Covering in Council Bluffs until his retirement in 2000.
Ron loved Iowa State athletics and could be found watching or listening to a sporting event with Alice. He also loved playing golf and traveling the country. Ron had an incredible sense of humor and was very sharp and witty throughout his life. He loved his family more than anything else. Ron had a great faith and was known for his family prayers before meals and get togethers.
Ron is survived by his wife Alice, his sons Doug (Cindy) Smith, Hiawatha and Steve (Carrie) Smith, Council Bluffs, grandchildren Mindy (Eric) Johnson, Lincoln, Neb., Nathan Smith, Council Bluffs, Jesse (Ashley) Smith, Council Bluffs, Stacia (Brady) Petersen, Bristol, Conn., Shawn (Kayla) Smith, Crookston, Minn., and Katie (Brad) Forney, Cottage Grove, Minn. He is also survived by great grandchildren Camryn and Gavin Johnson, Josie and Evie Smith, Nicole and Lucas Smith, Jensen and Curt Petersen, Noelle Smith, and Hazel and Theodore Forney. He is also survived by sister-in-law Anne Hein and many nieces, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents James and Cora Smith, his brothers Lester (Helen) Smith, Ralph (Elsie) Smith, and Wayne (Laura) Smith, sisters Elaine (Walt) Wedemeyer, and Lois (Paul) Eilts, nephews James and Gene Smith, John Smith, Dean Eilts, and Lynn Wedemeyer and niece Jan Rosenquist, father-in-law and mother-in-law Curt and Frances Anderson, and brother-in-law Merald Hein.
Visitation will be held from 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM at Hoy Kilnoski Funeral Home on Sunday, April 13, 2025.
Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM at Emanuel Lutheran Church on Monday, April 14, 2025. The family will direct memorials.
