Susan Powell

Susan Lylene (Bateman) Powell, age 70, passed away December 4, 2024. She was born August 21, 1954  in Waterloo, IA to Lyle (d) and Marlene (d) Bateman. She is survived by her five sisters: Virginia, Angela, Betsy, Robyn, and Marlena, as well as one brother: Christian.

She grew up in Waterloo, Decorah, and Cedar Rapids, IA. She graduated from Cedar Rapids Washington High School in 1972. She married Brad Powell on October 15,1973. They had four sons: Jonathan (Jackie Young), William (Jen), Joseph, and Lyle (Emily) Powell. Grandchildren include Nichole (Matt), Justice, Justine (Zach), Patrick, Jordan, Jalen, Jazlyn, Cassidy, Sophia, Gabe, Aly, Sydney, Lacey, Gaby, Tyson, and Carly. Great grandchildren include Addison, Miles, and Eliana Sue.

Susan graduated from Nebraska College of Business in 1988, with a degree in accounting. She worked as an accountant for Catholic Charities, Bethphage Mission, followed by 20 years at Jim Bender Trucking of Omaha. Susan loved her family, Iowa history, genealogy, and antiquing. She once explained that her passion for genealogy was fueled in part by her hope that the people she researched would not be forgotten.

We will not forget Susan and her good heart, her desire to be connected, her hope to be loved and cared for. She had the pain, too, of doubting all of these aspirations during her time on the planet, as so many people do. We want nothing more than to say despite those doubts, she was connected, loved, and cared for, now and always.

Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM at Hoy Kilnoski Funeral Home on Wednesday, December 11, 2024.

Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM at Hoy Kilnoski Funeral Home on Thursday, December 12, 2024. The family will direct memorials.

Burial will be at Ridgeway Cemetery in Ridgeway, Iowa in the Spring of 2025
