Virgil Clifford Cook, age 90, of Neola, Iowa, passed away on August 11, 2011, at the home of his daughter, Cathy, in Neola. He was born on October 16, 1920, to the late James and Julia (Agerson) Cook at Beresford, S.D. He attended school at Neola Public. Virgil proudly served his country during World War II in the United States Army and was a POW for 26 months in Germany. On June 5, 1946 he married Helen (Arlene) Gittins. Virgil worked as a Maintenance Worker for the State of Iowa and was also a self employed carpenter and painter. He was a member of the Neola American Legion Post #330. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen (Arlene); brothers, James (Perk) Cook, George Cook, Daniel Cook; sister, Iona Waters; brothers-in-law, Eugene (Sonny) Gittins and Bill Tiarks, Sr. Virgil is survived by 2 daughters, Cathy C. Eckmann and husband, Dennis, of Neola, Susan Hjelle and husband, Allan, of Elk Horn, Iowa; 2 brothers, Gerald Cook, Larry Cook and wife, Betty; 3 sisters, Lorraine Moffatt, Beverly Anderson and husband, Chuck, Bonnie Ackart; 2 grandsons, Troy Clifford Dargin, Eric Hjelle and wife Lindsey; granddaughter, Kristin Salge and husband Matt; brother-in-law, Leo Waters; sisters-in-law, Joyce Cook, Dorothy (Bunny) Tiarks, Iva Mae Gittins, Gloria Gittins, 1 great grandchild, 4 step great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. Visitation with the family is Sunday, August 14, 2011, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., at Hoy-Kilnoski Funeral Home and Crematory. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 15, 2011, 11 a.m., at the Neola Presbyterian Church with Pastor Dean Sparr, officiating. Burial will follow in the Neola Township Cemetery with graveside military honors. The family will direct memorials.
